The Alaskan King Crab is a large crustacean from the north Pacific. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
The Alaskan King Crab, also known as the Red King Crab due to the color it turns when cooked, is the largest of the king crabs. The largest individuals have a leg-span of 1.8m (5.9ft) with a 28cm (11in) wide carapace, and weigh up to 12.7kg (28lbs), although most crabs are smaller. Males are larger than females.
The Alaskan king crab is native to the far northern reaches of the Pacific Ocean and can be found across the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, where it is popular among fisheries. It is well adapted for life in cold water and spend most of their lives in deep waters (often more than 200m down) foraging for food, although the crabs require warmer temperatures to mate and breed. Although declining in its native range, the Alaskan king crab has also been introduced to the Barents Sea in the European Arctic, where it is considered an invasive species.
