The Amazonian Manatee is a mid-sized aquatic mammal from South America. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
The Amazonian manatee is the smallest of the four living Sirenians, a group of aquatic herbivorous animals that are closely related to modern elephants. Adults weigh an average of 270kg, but larger individuals have been recorded. Like other manatees, its front legs are modified into flippers, its tail is paddle-shaped and there are no hind limbs. The Amazonian manatee can be distinguished by the lack of nails on its flippers and its wrinkled skin, which is smoother than in other species.
Unlike other sirenians, which can be found in marine waters, the Amazonian manatee is an exclusively freshwater species, found across the Amazon river system. It is herbivorous, feeding on a variety of aquatic plants and may also eat fruits that fall into the water. The Amazonian manatee may live for up to 30 years in the wild, but illegal hunting means the species is considered vulnerable.
