Description[]
The Arabian oryx, or White oryx, is a species of antelope belonging to the Oryx genus. It is the smallest of the four oryx species, standing 1m (39in) at the shoulder and weighing 70kg (150lb). It has a distinctive almost-luminous white body, black markings on its face and legs, and long straight horns. Arabian oryx live in small mixed herds, usually up to fifteen animals, and eat mainly grass, although they will also eat a wide range of vegetation. They can go several weeks without water.
Arabian oryx are native to the desert regions of the Arabian peninsula and are well adapted to desert life. During warm parts of the day, they will seek out shade or dig depressions in the ground to rest. The Arabian oryx was hunted to extinction in the 1970s, but reintroduction of captive-bred animals now places their population at over 1000 animals.
