Archaeopteryx is a small European dinosaur. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park.
Description[]
Archaeopteryx (Ancient Wing) is a small dinosaur from the Jurassic period, most commonly found in what is now southern Germany. Around the size of a Eurasian Magpie, Archaeopteryx was notable due to its bird-like qualities. Although it featured many features similar to other small dinosaurs known at the time, including jaws with teeth and clawed hands, it also possessed broad feathered wings. Popularly known as "the first bird" after its discovery, Archaeopteryx remains a candidate for a link between non-avian dinosaurs and modern birds.
The wings of Archaeopteryx were well developed and relatively large, suggesting it was capable of gliding. It is possible that it was also capable of flapping flight, although if it could, its lack of a bony breastplate suggests it was not a strong flyer. Archaeopteryx lived around semi-arid coastlines and was a carnivore, likely preying on creatures smaller than itself.
Wildlife Park[]
Archaeopteryx is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park and was added as part of the Wild Creatures expansion pack. Like all extinct animals, it cannot be adopted unless bred back through a modern animal. In the case of Archaeopteryx, it is bred back through the American Flamingo.
Trivia[]
- The Archaeopteryx shown in Wildlife Park: Wild Creatures is outdated. It is shown with green feathers and a red head, whereas studies on its feathers in 2011 suggest it may have been primarily black.
