Description[]
The Arctic fox is a small fox native to the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It is well-adapted for life in the Arctic, being quite small - averaging 55cm (22in) in length - and having short legs and ears in order to avoid losing heat. Its most distinguishing feature is its thick fur coat, which has multiple layers to provide what is believed to be the best insulation of any mammal. The coat is white in winter, but during the summer it turns to a brown and gray color, both of which function as camouflage in its varying environment.
The Arctic fox is found across the Arctic, including the northern regions of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia and Russia. It is largely carnivorous, hunting anything it can find. It will use its strong sense of hearing to locate small rodents in the snow, or scavenge from carcasses located by its acute sense of smell. Bird eggs and chicks are also popular food items during the summer. Arctic foxes will often follow polar bears and scavenge from their kills, burying any surplus food for later. It can survive cold winters by curling up tightly, using its long bushy tail to cover its face.
