The Australian Pelican is a mid-sized Australian bird. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
The Australian pelican is one of eight species of pelicans, a group of water birds identified by their long beaks and large throat pouches. It has a wingspan of up to 2.6m (8.5ft) and weighs up to 7.7kg (17lbs), making it one of the heaviest flying birds in Australia. Its large bill is longer than that of any other species of bird, with the longest being measured at 50cm (20in) in length. The Australian pelican is sometimes also known as the Spectacled Pelican, after the yellow rings around its eyes that turn orange during the breeding season.
The Australian pelican occurs across mainland Australia and Tasmania, often in large flocks. It can live in any large expanse of water, regardless of salinity or surrounding environment, and will often hunt in groups to drive fish into shallow water before grabbing them in their bills. Females will lay up to four eggs, but usually only the oldest chick will survive, competing fiercely with its siblings. The Australian pelican is common across its range and is not considered threatened.
