The Blacktip Shark is a mid-sized cartilaginous fish. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
The blacktip shark is a species of requiem shark, a family that contains a variety of tropical migratory sharks such as the Tiger Shark and the similarly-named Blacktip Reef Shark. It is common across tropical waters around the world, favouring coastal waters and can also be found in brackish waters such as mangrove swamps. Adults can reach lengths of up to 1.5m (4.9ft) and can be identified by the black tips or edges across their fins.
The blacktip shark is primarily a piscivore, with fish making up 90% of its diet. It is an energetic species and individuals have been recorded making spinning leaps out of the water whilst hunting at speeds of up to 6.3 metres per second. Like other requiem sharks, females give birth to live young and will often travel to shallow coastal "nurseries" to give birth, which allows the pups protection from predators and access to food. Although human attacks have been recorded, the blacktip shark has a comparatively "timid" demeanor compared to other members of its family.
