The Bongo is a large African ungulate. It is adoptable in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
The Bongo is a large antelope native to Africa. Although males and females are similar in size, males are heavier, weighing in at up to 405kg (893lbs), making the species the third-largest antelope in the world. Bongos have a chestnut coat with white stripes which serves as camouflage and heavy spiral horns which are used for fighting and clearing their way through trees. Males have a darker coat and large horns than females.
The bongo lives in the dense tropical rainforests in West- and Central-Africa. It is largely a nocturnal species and browses on a variety of leaves, bushes and vines - bongos have also been observed eating burnt wood and charcoal as a means of obtaining salt and minerals. Males are typically solitary, whilst females will live in small groups. Bongos are naturally timid animals and will flee at speed through dense undergrowth if they feel threatened. There are two subspecies of Bongo - the Lowland Bongo and the Mountain Bongo - both of which are facing a wild population decline due to hunting and habitat destruction.
Wildlife Park 2[]
“ | Latin name: Tragelaphus Eurycerus. Because of their way of living, one rarely gets to see Bongos in Africa. The red-brown fur of the animal has 12 to 14 vertical lines on its side. The Bongo’s belly is black. Both sexes have spiral horns. Even though one has spotted groups of 20 Bongos at salt licks, it is assumed that the animals only live in groups of up to three. Adult bucks are sometimes loners. Within their territory, this type of antelope uses set trails and dung areas. These by and large nocturnal animals can move quickly through the thickest underwood, with their head thrust out and their horns back over their shoulders. The Bongos’ diet includes leaves, sprouts and bark, except for bamboo. Even though the wild Bongo population is rather small, it is not yet officially listed as an endangered species. | ” |
