The Butterflies are a group of small-winged insects. They are an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2.
Description[]
Butterflies are insects in the order Lepidoptera, a group that also contains the very similar looking moths. As adults, they can be identified by their large scale-covered wings, which are often brightly coloured. As a general rule, most butterflies are active during the day, whilst moths are largely nocturnal, although there are exceptions. There are approximately 18,500 species of butterfly, which are distributed worldwide except for Antarctica and live in a variety of habitats. Some species will make long migrations to overwintering sites.
Butterflies undergo a process known as complete metamorphosis. A female will lay her eggs on a leaf which the larvae, or caterpillars, will eat once they hatch. Caterpillars spend all their time searching for, and eating, food and will grow rapidly. Once fully grown, the caterpillar moults into a pupa and subsequently transforms into a butterfly. Feeding primarily on nectar, butterfly lifespans range from a week to nearly a year, depending on the species.
