The Caribou, or Reindeer, is a large North American-European ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park and Wildlife Park 3.

Description[]

The Caribou is a member of the deer family adapted for life in Arctic regions. Native to the northern areas of North America, Northern Europe and Siberia, there are many different subspecies of caribou, typically varying in size - the average caribou weighs around 182 kg (401 lbs). Caribou have many adaptations for life in cold climates, including a double-layered coat of fur to maintain their core temperature, large hooves that act as snowshoes and the ability to see ultraviolet light. Uniquely among deer, both male and female caribou possess antlers.

Caribou live in large herds and are well known for their mass migrations, with some subspecies covering 400,000 square miles and travelling 5000 kilometers (3000 miles) a year to find food, although other subspecies are more sedentary. During winter months, caribou feed largely on lichen, but will also eat willow and birch leaves, sedges and grass. Caribou are the only deer to have been domesticated by humans and are often used as draught animals.

Wildlife Park[]

The Caribou is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park under its European name of Reindeer. It is available in the base game. When adopting the species, it is best to build high-height enclosure as they are capable of jumping over the low fences. Their daily needs and enrichments include hay, leaves, mineral (base game only), water, tussling (e.g. boxing equipment), and scratching (e.g. branches). In terms of environment, they prefer 30% of ground hardness and temperate plants. An example of preferred ground is a full lawn of grass.

Wildlife Park 3[]

The Caribou is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3. It is obtainable in the Alaska expansion pack. Their daily food and enrichment necessities include leaves, grass, mineral, water, scratching and swimming. In terms of their environment, they prefer soft grounds like peat. They also prefer having a minimum herd of 4, with 50 as the maximum herd number.
