The Cheetah is a mid-sized African felid. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2.
Description[]
The Cheetah is the world's fastest land animal, reaching top speeds of up to 80mph (128km/h) in short bursts. The cheetah's body is adapted for speed - it is lightly built, with adults weighing up to 66kg (143lbs), and has long thin legs which can give it an 8m stride when running. Other adaptations include a long tail which helps the cheetah turn when running, claws that are unable to be fully retracted which increase grip, wide nostrils that enable air to flow easily and black tear-like markings under its eyes that may help reduce the glare of the sun.
The cheetah lives in the open plains in Africa and uses its speed to hunt small nimble prey such as antelope and hares. Females typically live alone, although males, usually brothers from the same litter, will often stay and hunt together in small groups. Although successful hunters, the cheetah's light build means it is easily chased away from prey by other carnivores such as lions and hyenas. Originally found across Africa and into Asia, cheetah numbers have declined dramatically, with the only cheetahs outside Africa found in a small region of central Iran.
Wildlife Park 2[]
“ | Latin name: Acinonyx Jubatus. There are a number of differences between cheetahs and other big cats. Cheetahs have long and slender legs and their entire physique is made for speed. With a top speed of up to 100 km/h in short burst, they are the fastest mammals on earth. Unlike most other big cats, the underside of a cheetah’s paw is much harder and the paw has only semi-retractable claws. The cheetah’s head with its round and high-placed eyes is fairly small compared to the body size. The cheetah needs these high-placed eyes, so it can still look up, when moving in high grass. The cheetah also uses a different hunting method than most other big cats. These animals are typical chase hunters, whose diet consists of small types of antelopes, primarily gazelles. As soon as a cheetah makes out a herd of gazelles, it stalks its prey, but then shows itself and trots along with the herd, as if disinterested. In doing so, it is choosing a suitable prey. Then it darts toward its prey, bringing it to the ground with its strong paws, before biting it on the underside of the throat. Unlike most other big cats, cheetahs never return to their prey to eat for a second time. Since the cheetah is a genuine sprinter, it will give up, if it fails to make a quick catch. It can often be observed that cheetahs have to give up their kill to lions. Since lions are heavier and stronger than a cheetah, all it can do is to run away. The cheetah is also called hunting leopard. This name stems from past times, when these animals got domesticated and trained for the hunt, just like greyhounds. | ” |
