The Common Dolphin, identified as the Short-Beaked Common Dolphin in Wildlife Park 3, is a mid-sized cetacean. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
The common dolphin is the most abundant species of cetacean in the world, found in coastal and pelagic waters across the world and with an estimated population of around six million. Smaller than the more famous Bottle-Nosed Dolphin, common dolphins reach a maximum length of 2.5m (8.2ft) and typically weigh up to 150kg (330lb). The common dolphin can be distinguished by its "hourglass" side patterning, which is yellow at the front and grey at the rear, contrasting its black top and white underside. The taxonomy of the common dolphin is unclear; it is traditionally divided into two or three species, but evidence has since suggested it may represent a single species with four subspecies.
Like most dolphins, common dolphins live in large groups. These groups can contain hundreds of individuals divided into subgroups of around 30 dolphins, but groups will sometimes merge into mega-pods consisting of over 10000 dolphins. Common dolphins communicate through a series of whistles and each dolphin is believed to have its own signature whistle used for identification. The species has a varied diet of fish and squid. Although often featuring in Greek and Roman artwork and culture, the common dolphin is relatively rare in captivity.
