Description[]

The common dolphinfish, or Mahi-Mahi ("Very Strong" is the Hawaiian language) is a ray-finned fish native to off-shore tropical and sub-tropical waters worldwide, with common sightings in the Gulf of Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii and the Indian Ocean. Males can weigh up to 13kg (29lbs) or more, with females being slightly smaller. The common dolphinfish can be distinguished by its long dorsal fin, which runs along the length of its back, its bright blue-green and golden coloration and the prominent protruding forehead found in mature males.

The common dolphinfish is most commonly found at the surface of the ocean, where it hunts for food such as squid and other fish, including flying fish. It is one of the fastest fish in the ocean, reaching speeds of up to 92.6km/h (57.5mph). Dolphinfish spawn near the surface close to Sargassum weed rafts, where the young shelter for protection. One of the fastest growing of all fish, a common dolphinfish may live for up to five years. Although not threatened, it is a popular target among fishermen.
