The Sawfish, identified specifically as the Dwarf Sawfish in Wildlife Park 3, is a large cartilaginous fish. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
Sawfish are a group of rays distinguished by their large toothed rostrum that resembles a saw. The rostrum typically takes up a quarter or a third of the sawfish's body length and is used to detect and capture prey. When a sawfish locates another fish, it will swing its rostrum, striking and incapacitating its prey before eating it. Sawfish are typically found in coastal waters, but will also tolerate freshwater.
The dwarf sawfish, also known as the Queensland Sawfish, is the smallest of five species, but can still reach lengths of 3.2m (10.5ft). It is native to the western and central Indo-Pacific ocean region and, like all sawfish, will also eat molluscs and crustaceans as well as fish. All sawfish species are endangered due to hunting, although the dwarf sawfish is protected in Australian waters.
Wildlife Park 2[]
“ | Lat. Name: Pristidae Pristis. The Saw Ray, also called Sawfish, is a ray with a very shark-like body. Its characteristic saw serves to catch prey by injuring its prey or looking for it in the muddy ground. Saw Rays live in tropical coastal regions of the Atlantic and Indopacific, but also in sub-tropical waters such as the western Mediterranean and the eastern Pacific. The Saw Ray is universally endangered, because his saw is traded as a trophy or for medical purposes. | ” |
