The Grevy's Zebra, also known as the Imperial Zebra, is a mid-sized African ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2.
Description[]
Grévy's zebra (Equus grevyi), also known as the imperial zebra, is the largest living wild equid and the most threatened of the three species of zebra, the other two being the plains zebra and the mountain zebra. Named after Jules Grévy, it is found in parts of Kenya and Ethiopia. Superficially, Grévy's zebras' physical features can help to identify it from the other zebra species; their overall appearance is slightly closer to that of a mule, compared to the more "equine" (horse) appearance of the plains and mountain zebras. Compared to other zebra species, Grévy's are the tallest; they have mule-like, larger ears, and have the tightest stripes of all zebras. They have distinctively erect manes, and more slender snouts.
Wildlife Park 2[]
“ | Latin name: Equus Grevyi. With a shoulder height of 1.5 metres, the grevy zebra is the largest of this species. Its head is round and thick. Its body looks more like that of an African wild ass, compared to the mountain zebra and the plains zebra, which are more similar to wild horses. The grevy zebra is native to the eastern regions of Africa; mainly in Ethiopia and Somalia. It prefers upland moor regions with a large occurrence of reed. Their grazing range is much larger than the range of the smaller plains zebras. Striking is the difference in behaviour, compared to the plains zebra. Greyvys are loners, or they live in only very small groups which only come together to mate. This makes them very vulnerable to predators. Grevy´s live in large ranges, which they defend in terms of their reproduction. Aside from that, fellow animals of the same species, which subdue, may also graze in the same range. The plains zebras, on the other hand, form small harems, in which all functions are split. The grevy´s do not split the functions, i.e. the stallions have no protective function within the group. Each gevy zebra has to take care of itself. In addition, grevys are very picky in terms of what they eat, whereas the plains zebra eats almost any kind of grass. The coloration of their fur is different as well: the grevy has much more black, particularly around the base of the tail, which makes it difficult to hide from predators. The stripes are thinner and closer together. The grevy zebra was hunted much more for its beautiful fur than the plains zebra. Grevys have become endangered, and only very few animals still live in reserves. The fact that this zebra tends to migrate so far is not a result of an inner drive, but much more the result of changing environmental factors (lack of water, for example). | ” |
