The Hawksbill Sea Turtle is a mid-sized marine reptile. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
The hawksbill sea turtle is one of seven species of extant turtle that are adapted for life in the sea, using their paddle-shaped front limbs for swimming. It is one of the smaller species of sea turtle, with adults reaching 1m (3ft) in length and weighing 80kg (180lbs), although some individuals are heavier. The hawksbill sea turtle is named after its beak-like mouth, which is more sharply pronounced and hooked than other species of sea turtle.
The hawksbill sea turtle is found in tropical waters across the world and travels long distances to find food. Although omnivorous, up to 95% of its diet consists of sponges, with different populations having preference for specific species of sponge. Included in their diet are sponges that are highly toxic to other animals. Like all sea turtles, females only come ashore to lay their eggs. Due to hunting and harvesting for their shells, the hawksbill sea turtle is now considered Critically Endangered.
