The Humpback Whale, identified as the Hump-backed Whale in Wildlife Park 2, is a very large cetacean. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.

Description[]

Found across the world's oceans, the humpback whale is one of the largest members of the baleen whale family, reaching lengths of up to 16m (52ft) and weighing up to 30 tons. It is named after the distinctive hump on its back. Other distinctive features include a head covered in tubercles, a tail fluke with a wavy trailing edge and long pectoral fins - proportionately, they are the longest of any cetacean. Instead of teeth, the humpback whale, like all members of its family, has keratinous plates known as baleen in its upper jaw, which it uses to filter out small fish and krill from water. Humpback whales have been known to blow bubbles in order to trap fish in a "net" and can catch thousands of fish in one attack using this technique.

During breeding season, male humpback whales will produce a complex "song" that may last for up to twenty minutes at a time. It is possible that the "song" is used to attract females, or to issue a challenge to other males. Males will compete for females using a series of behaviours such as breaching, spyhopping and slapping the water with their tails and pectoral fins. Humpback whales may travel up to 25000 kilometers (16000 miles) a year in order to find food and give birth. Studies have shown them interacting with many other cetaceans, including other large whales.

Wildlife Park 2[]

Lat. Name: Megaptera novaeangliae. The Hump-backed Whale is a smaller representative of the Baleen Whales, populating the oceans and seas of the world. With up to 190 decibels, his song is one of the loudest in the animal kingdom. Large-scale whaling has decimated the world-wide population to 12.000 animals.
