The Leopard is a mid-sized felid from Africa and Asia. It is an adoptable animal in all three Wildlife Park games.
Description[]
The leopard is the smallest and most widespread of the five Panthera (or "Big Cat") species, ranging across Africa and southern Asia. Although the leopard physically resembles the Jaguar, it is more lightly built and the rosette spots on its coat, used to camouflage it from prey, are smaller. There are eight subspecies of leopard, which differ in coat-length and color. The African leopard has a comparatively thin coat of fur and is lighter in color than other leopards.
The leopard can live in a variety of habitats, from savannah to tropical rainforest. It is a solitary animal that lives in a vast territory. Leopards are skilled hunters and will eat whatever they can catch, from antelopes to monkeys. They will stalk their prey before pouncing on them when they are close enough. Leopards are skilled climbers and will often take any food they have caught up a tree to eat it without being disturbed by other predators.
Black Panther[]
Black panthers, more accurately known as black leopards, are individual leopards with a genetic mutation know as melanism. Mealanism is the development of the dark-colored pigment melanin in the skin. In leopards it is caused by a recessive gene. In the wild black leopards are common in the equatorial rainforest of Malaya and the tropical rainforest on the slopes of some African mountains such as Mount Kenya. However black leopards are still the most common in captivity due to selective breeding in zoos and exotic pet trades over decades.
