Macrauchenia is a large prehistoric mammal from South America. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
Macrauchenia (Long Llama) is a Litoptern, an order of ungulates that evolved in South America, which at the time was an isolated island continent. Like many island animals, it evolved to fill the niches that animals such as camels and giraffes filled elsewhere. Macrauchenia bared a passing resemblance to a Llama, with a long neck and comparatively small head, but was quite stocky, with sturdy legs. Adults could have weighed over 1000kg, making it comparable to a Black Rhinoceros. Macrauchenia, like many other members of its family, featured large retracted nasal openings on top of its skull. Popular explanations for these nasal openings include the presence of a large Moose-like nose, a flexible upper lip or a short trunk, although it is unclear which of these Macrauchenia possessed.
Macrauchenia lived across South America, in a wide range of habitats and evidence suggest it lived in small herds. It was a herbivore and likely ate leaves and grasses. It was likely a fast runner and it is believed to have been highly mobile, being able to make sharp turns whilst running to escape predators, which would have included Smilodon. One of the last of its kind, Macrauchenia lived from seven million years ago to around 10,000 years ago.
Wildlife Park 2[]
“ | Lat. name: Macrauchenia. With a shoulder height of 1.8 m, Macrauchenia was a strange looking animal. It was about as large as a camel (Camelus) and may have been similar in behaviour too. The long neck and nostrils at the skull indicate a short trunk. The order of Litopterna arose halfway through the Paleocene, and gave rise to innumerable species which resembled today's horses and camels due to their extended limbs. Most of them became extinct at the end of the Pleistocene. Only two species, one of them Macrauchenia, survived in South America until the end of the Pleistocene. Macrauchenia patachonica, the last of its kind, probably only became extinct around 10.000 years ago. Macrauchenia probably inhabited the savannah. This is presumed on the grounds of its geographical distribution. It is more difficult to reconstruct its nutritional habits. Due to its possible trunk and the high-crowned teeth it is assumed that he was a leaf or grass eater. | ” |

Trivia[]
- Macrauchenia is portrayed in-game with a short trunk, based on information speculated at the time. As a result, it also resembles its appearance from the British TV documentary Walking with Beasts.
- There is currently no proof that Macrauchenia had a trunk, although rock art suggests that at least one closely related genus may have had one.
