The Maned Wolf is a large South American canid. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
The maned wolf is the largest canid native to South America, reaching a shoulder height of up to 90cm (35in) and weighing up to 30kg (66lbs). Despite its name, it is not closely related to the Wolf and is in fact the only member of its genus. The most distinguishing trait of the maned wolf are its extremely long, thin legs. This, combined with its reddish-brown fur, has given it the nickname "Fox on stilts", although it is also not closely related to foxes.
The maned wolf lives in the grasslands of central and eastern-South America. It is believed that its long legs are an adaptation to spot prey over the tall grass in which it hunts. Maned wolves hunt small mammals, birds and sometimes fish, but half of its diet consists of vegetable matter, with a preference for the Wolf Apple fruit. Unlike many large canids, maned wolves are solitary animals. Although shy and rarely a threat to livestock, maned wolves are hunted by humans, and the species is threatened in the wild.
