The Margay is a small American felid. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.

Description[]

The margay is a small member of the cat family that can be found from Mexico to Brazil and Paraguay. It closely resembles the Ocelot in appearance, but is smaller, weighing only 4kg (8.8lbs) at most and reaching lengths of 79cm (31in), with a 51cm (20in) tail. Like many other felids, it is solitary and nocturnal.

Found almost exclusively in dense forests, including deciduous and tropical, the margay is adapted for living in trees. It is a skilled climber and is able to rotate its ankles 180 degrees in order to securely grip branches. It primarily hunts small mammals, such as monkeys, as well as birds and reptiles. It will chase its prey through trees, although margays have also been reported mimicking the sound of baby monkeys in order to attract the attention of adults. Initially hunted for its fur, wild margay numbers are still at risk due to habitat loss.
