The Mermaid is a mythical aquatic creature with roots in Europe, Asia and Africa. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
Potentially influenced by the Sirens of Greek mythology, the mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and upper-body of a female human and the tail of a fish. They are often depicted as being very beautiful, with long flowing hair. A male equivalent, the merman, has also been described. Mermaids are often associated with shipwrecks, storms and other nautical disasters. Their relationship with humans is known to vary, as they are sometimes depicted as attracting sailors with their songs before luring them to their demise, whilst other depictions show them falling in love with humans.
Historical accounts of mermaids are known, although their validity is debatable. The Italian navigator Christopher Columbus wrote about them during his exploration of the Caribbean, although it is possible he was describing a marine mammal such as a seal or manatee. Regardless, the mermaid continues to be popularly depicted in modern culture, with one of the most well known being Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.
