The Parrotfish is a small bony fish. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.

Description[]

Parrotfish are a group of bony fish closely related to wrasse. There are around 95 different species and all can be identified by their parrot-like beak, formed by tightly arranged teeth. Parrotfish use their beaks to rasp algae from coral and other rocky areas. After digesting the edible portions, the remains are excreted as fine sand, which helps create small islands and sandy beaches. Most parrotfish reach up to 50cm (20in) in length, but some are larger or smaller.

Parrotfish live on coral reefs around the world, although most are found in the Indo-Pacific ocean region. Most parrotfish are born female and whilst some individuals remain female their whole lives (known as the initial phase), others will change sex and become male (known as the terminal phase). Some species will produce a mucus cocoon for them to sleep in, which is believed to hide their scent from predators. Parrotfish are extremely important to coral reefs as they will keep the coral clean from algae on a daily basis.
