The Pere David's Deer is a medium-sized Asian ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park.

Description[]

The Pere David's Deer, named after the French missionary Armand David who made the animal known to the western world, is a large species of deer native to the river valleys of China. It is also known informally as sibuxiang (four not alike) as although a deer, its long slender head is similar to horses, its comparatively long tail resembles that of a donkey and its large, wide hooves were comparable to the hooves of oxen. Its antlers are large and have a unique "back-to-front" structure. The Pere David's deer is semi-aquatic, spending long periods in water and being a capable swimmer. Its diet consists of grass and occasionally aquatic plants.

The Pere David's Deer was once common across China, but as their swampland habitat dried up, their numbers dwindled. Hunting would eventually drive the wild deer population to extinction in 1939, although captive specimens still survived and were successfully bred. A captive herd was established at Woburn Abbey in the United Kingdom and many deer from this herd were donated to the Chinese government in order to reintroduce the species to the wild.
