Protoceratops is a small Asian dinosaur. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
Protoceratops (First horned face) is a member of the ceratopsians, a group of dinosaurs that also includes Styracosaurus and Triceratops. Unlike these dinosaurs, Protoceratops was smaller, only about the size of a modern sheep, and did not possess horns. Like most other ceratopsians, Protoceratops had a large neck frill that extended from the back of its head. The frill is believed to have grown as the animal aged and it is possible that males had larger frills than females, suggesting Protoceratops used it for display.
Protoceratops lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now Mongolia. It was most likely a herbivore; its large skull and muscular jaws suggest it had a strong bite and it featured dozens of teeth in its jaws for chewing tough vegetation. Protoceratops is believed to have lived in large herds and a fossilized nest discovered in 2011 suggest that females would have taken care of their young. Predators of Protoceratops included theropod dinosaurs such as Velociraptor; one famous fossil discovered in 1971 showed the two dinosaurs fighting each other and seemingly dying together after being buried during a sandstorm.
