The Saiga is a mid-sized Asian ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.

Description[]

The saiga is a species of antelope that is closely allied with gazelles and is adapted for living in cold regions. Standing up to 81cm (32in) at the shoulder and weighing up to 69kg (152lbs), its most distinctive feature is its large, downward facing nose. The nose serves a variety of functions, depending on the time of year; in summer, it filters out dust as the herd migrates and cools the blood, whilst in winter, it heats up cold air before it is inhaled. Only males possess horns, which are larger in northern subspecies.

The saiga was once extremely common throughout most of Eurasia and dates back to the last ice age. It lives in semi-deserts, steppes and grasslands, gathering in large herds consisting of a single male, up to 50 females and their young. The herd migrates large distances searching for food, which includes various species of plants poisonous to other animals. A combination of hunting, climate change, habitat destruction and disease has decimated the saiga population and today, they can only be found in small regions of Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. It is listed as Critically Endangered, making it one of the world's rarest antelopes.
