The Spotted Hyena is a large African mammal. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 2 and Wildlife Park 3.
Description[]
Spotted Hyenas are the largest of the four species of hyena, measuring up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) in length and about 1 meter at the shoulder and weighing up to 82kg (180 pounds) with females being slightly larger than males. Despite resembling canines, spotted hyenas are feliforms that belong in the infraorder Viverroidea, which also contains mongooses.
Spotted hyenas are native to sub-Saharan Africa but they may have originated in Asia and once ranged throughout Europe during the late Pleistocene. They live in hierarchical social groups called clans that can consist of up to 130 members, being matriarchal, high ranking females and their cubs dominate over males. Although commonly thought of as scavengers, using their powerful jaws to crush through bones, they are also capable hunters in their own right.
Wildlife Park 2[]
“ | Lat. name: Crocutua crocutua. The largest competitor of the lion in the African savannah is the Spotted Hyena. While it was once assumed that most nocturnal animals were scavengers, it is known today that the spotted hyena also hunts. The spotted hyena is the largest of the hyenas. Its appearance is typical for this species with shortened hindquarters and a sloping back. Although hyenas look like dogs, they do belong to the family of cats. As the name presumes, the spotted hyena has a spotted coat with dark brown spots on a light brown coat. The muscles in the front part of the body are very strong and the jaws of the spotted hyena consist of large hard teeth used to break up large bones and even horns. The female is about 10 % larger than the male and has enlarged sexual organs, which makes it difficult for experts to distinguish between male and female. Another typical aspect is the ""laugh"" of the spotted hyena, a sound used for signaling within the pack. This sound is similar to human laughter, which is why the spotted hyena is sometimes also called laughing hyena. | ” |
