The Takin is a large Asian ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in Wildlife Park 3.

Description[]

The takin is a member of the ungulate family Caprinae, which also includes goats and sheep. It is one of the largest members of its family, reaching a height of 140cm (55in) at the shoulder and weighing up to 350kg (770lbs) in large males, although its stocky body is comparatively short in length. There are four subspecies of takin, all native to the eastern Himalayas and identifiable by the color of their long, shaggy coat. Both male and female takin possess stout, ridged horns.

The takin lives primarily in forested valleys and grass-covered mountainous regions. They typically live in small family groups of up to 20 individuals and will migrate in large numbers in search of food, often numbering around 300 individuals. A takin's diet includes leaves, grasses, flowers and bamboo shoots, and individuals will often gather at salt licks. Takin mark their territory using an oily strong-smelling substance secreted from their body. Hunting and habitat destruction are the main threats to the takin.
