Description[]
Although one of the smaller cetaceans, the white-sided dolphin is of average size for an oceanic dolphin. Males can reach lengths of 2.5m (8.2ft) and weigh up to 200kg (440lbs), with females being smaller. It is named after the light grey patches running down its side, which contrasts the rest of its body, which is a darker grey in comparison.
The white-sided dolphin lives in the cool, temperate waters of the Northern Pacific, no further south than the South China sea and Baja California peninsula. It is a social animal, living in family groups that typically contain 90 individuals. They primarily eat small fish and, like other dolphins, they are highly intelligent and inquisitive, readily approaching boats. Its only known predator is the Orca. The white-sided dolphin is believed to live for up to 40 years in the wild.
